Optoma HD65 Plus 720P DLP Projector with Backpack and Speakers Review

Optoma HD65 Plus 720P DLP Projector with Backpack and Speakers

Replaced my Mitsubishi MC900, HD65 plus is truly amazing product. We use it with Blue-Ray player with a 70" projector screen in our covered patio. The package comes with a backpack and we used it to carry the projector to our friends house to watch superbowl. The projector produced jaw dropping image. Needless to say, they plan to buy the Optima too. I don't think we will ever go back to our 42" plasma tv :)!!
Cons: The zoom range seems to be low. Overall, it is a great projector.

Sharp EL-738C 10-Digit Financial Calculator Review

Sharp EL-738C 10-Digit Financial Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite some really handy features, the Sharp EL-738 seems to be largely overlooked by consumers. This may be because the manufacturer seems to have made virtually no effort to market the calculator. I personally would not have considered it if I have not been dissatisfied with a competing product from HP that I had purchased several weeks previously. Even then, I had to make a determined effort to research the Sharp, because there is little information available about the product online.
The competing product I had purchased was the HP 10BII. I had bought it with some confidence, having previously owned two HP calculators with which I had been quite satisfied. But this time, it was different. After several days of using my new HP 10BII, I noticed with alarm that I was making frequent input errors. I traced the problem to the 6 key: If tapped lightly on the right side, it works, but if tapped lightly on the left side, it does not enter any digits at all. This discovery was a real disappointment, and I soon started to feel pangs of buyer's remorse. Wistfully, I window-shopped online for the two alternatives I could have chosen instead - a really stylish silver TI financial calculator, and the Sharp EL-738.
Noting some user complaints about the TI calculator's keys, I focused my attention on the Sharp, which is priced significantly lower anyway. Unable to find much information on the product, I resorted to perusing the user manual, which I found on one of Sharp's web sites. Based on the manual, the EL-738 seemed like a pretty good product. This observation was consistent with my previous experience with Sharp calculators: I have owned two BASIC-programmable Sharp calculators in years gone by, and they were very satisfying toys indeed. So I took the plunge and ordered the Sharp EL-738. Though it has a few annoying features, I believe I made a good choice overall. Here's why:
1.The keys are a bit on the soft side for my liking, but after several weeks of frequent use, they have proven entirely dependable.
2.The 2-line display allows you to see the figures you have just entered, along with the result of your calculation, allowing you to double-check your work as you go. The HP does not offer this convenience, as it has only a single-line display.
3.For interest rate calculations, your can enter a nominal interest rate that compounds at a frequency that differs from the payment frequency. This is a common situation with mortgages, for example, where the nominal rate compounds semi-annually, but the payments are monthly. The Sharp calculator seems less confusing than the HP in this regard. However, when re-evaluating a cash flow, you may need to change the compounding frequency, which is easy enough. But you just have to remember to do it at the right point in the procedure, or you'll get an incorrect result.
4.To compute a missing financial value, you need to press the "Comp" key before pressing the key that represents the unknown value. While this requires an additional keystroke, the advantage is that you will never be confused about whether you are inputting or computing. For me, the "Comp" key makes the Sharp less confusing than the HP. The Sharp also has a Recall key, as does the HP.
5.Calculating loan amortizations is straightforward, and you can easily scroll through successive periods.
6.The EL-738 offers an assortment of built-in scientific functions - which I personally don't use. In contrast, the HP seems to offer no built-in scientific functions at all.
7.This unit comes with a semi-hard plastic cover permanently attached, which you can fold over the keys when you place the calculator in your pocket or briefcase. It protects the keys, and it looks tidy, but it's not particularly elegant. Nonetheless, it is far superior to the HP's soft case which is too tight, and barely fits the calculator. I can say that the HP's unsatisfactory cover did not dispose me kindly toward the manufacturer, to put it mildly.
On the down side, the Sharp's display offers only 10 digits. I find that sufficient for my own use, but it's two less than the HP's 12-digits. So if you need to compute interest rates to the closest 10-billionth of a percent, forget the Sharp. However, the Sharp does allow you to limit the number of decimal places that will be displayed in calculation results, if that's any consolation.
What I find a bit more annoying is that you have to make a special effort to convert a nominal interest rate to an effective rate, and vice versa. The HP is better on this count. Fortunately, the Sharp procedure is really simple. Anyway, this kind of conversion is not usually necessary on the Sharp, as the calculator takes care of the interest rate conversion fuss automatically for most loan calculations.
Another annoyance is that the manual does not provide examples of more complex calculations, such as calculating the market value of an offer where a purchaser is proposing a vendor take-back mortgage at an interest rate that differs from the market rate. The Sharp does this with ease, but the manual won't tell you how. Granted, most calculator manuals tend to be similarly skimpy. Nonetheless, it's a pity that while a few extra pages in the manual would have added very little to the product cost, they could have allowed enough room to properly explain the impressive power of this calculator.
Finally, my last gripe is that amortization results cannot be stored in a memory location for further computations. For example, if you want to know the outstanding balance of a loan after 5 years, it's easy enough to calculate. But if you want to make further calculations, you have to write down the result, then exit the amortization function, and then type in the OSB again. This certainly is an annoyance, though I have grudgingly gotten used to it.
Oh, one last thing: If you want a calculator that makes you look like a stylish financial services professional, get the HP or the TI. The Sharp's keypad graphics sacrifice style in favor of functionality. But while the look may be a bit nerdy, at least the keypad markings are easy to see. On the other hand, if you have no concern for appearances, and just want to get on with your job, then the Sharp will undoubtedly prove satisfactory.
Overall, the Sharp's practicality and ease of use far outweigh its minor shortcomings. Having used both the HP and the Sharp, I can say that they are both good calculators, but the Sharp is the calculator that I depend on.
(To be fair to HP, they did promptly and courteously replace their calculator after I made a warranty claim because of the defective keypad.)

Casio FC-200V Financial Calculator with 4-Line Display Review

Casio FC-200V Financial Calculator with 4-Line Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I studied Finance and Mathematics.
TI Professional:
Pro:
1. You may use this in Actuarial exams or CFA exams.
2. Once you get used to it, it is a good calculator. Most finance textbooks gives examples using TI calculator.
Con:
1. Harder to use than Casio, but not too hard.
2. Battery supported, you should change your battery before going into the Actuarial or CFA exam if you have been using this calculator for awhile. I believe it lasts about 1-3 years.
Casio
Pro:
1. More features
2. Easier to use
3. Battery and solar supported
4. Navigation feature, you can scroll up and down on few lines of display
Con:
1. You can't use this on Actuarial or CFA exams.
2. School textbooks teach you how to use financial calculator using TI, not this one.
My opinion:
If you are not a hard-core finance person, getting a Casio might be better since it's easier and cheaper to use. However, as an actuary, I use TI most of the time.
If you are a Finance major, plan to take any Actuarial or CFA exams, get TI because you have no choice. (You may use HP for CFA exam, but I think people who started their career many years ago use HP, young people these days use TI)
I hope this review helped.

Great product! Owned this for 2 days now and love it! Got my Xbox 360, Wii, and computer all hooked up to this baby and am not looking back.
There is definatly a downside which I have mostly remedied, however, most people will not be able to. The thing is that this projector has NO AUDIO OUTPUT. Which is weird considering it has HDMI and such. This means if you connect something with the HDMI, you are stuck using the build in speaker for audio. Bummer. Also, if you connect using the y/r/w cables you are also stuck using the internal speaker, but if you have a stereo like I do, connect it to the stereo and run it to the projector. Not that the internal speaker sounds bad, it actually sounds great, but it's just not the best while watching home movies or gaming.
Great picture quality and projects and image of about 5 1/2' x 7'. Actually is slightly bigger, but roughly that size. I'm very happy with my projector.
UPDATE LOST ONE STAR*- Projector did not work today, first time since I bought it (6 monthsish). Ive mostly used it on economy setting. I hear a rattling like broken pieces of something, and after disassembling it, there might be a big problem. Projector wasn't dropped, hit or anything, it sits far above and out of reach. I now have to hopefully find a resolution, either something exploded inside, or bulb burst. Im 50/50 on which it is right now. Ill update ASAP
UPDATE TO UPDATE-5TH STAR RETURNED- So the reason is my bulb had exploded. First I was upset and believed it to be an equipment issue, but after realizing the extension cord I run this from was unplugged, I put 2 and 2 together. Cord unplugged while running (even in low power mode) will cause the bulb to not cool down while being around the already cool surroundings = BOOM goes the dynamite (bulb). So this was my bad (or another occupant), and not the projector. I'd give it 5 1/2 stars now for doubting it. Ha ha, enjoy and don't accidentally unplug this!!!!

HP 12C Platinum Calculator Review

HP 12C Platinum Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using both the 12c Platinum (call it 12cP) and 12C for study and at work. I use the 12C gold more often than the 12cP.
My biggest disappointment with the 12cP is its relatively slow processing SPEED vis-a-vis the predecessor 12C and its competition (the HP10B, TIBA2plus).
The 12cP is notably slower than the 12C especially when performing Time Value of Money (TVM) calculations.
Running both HP12s side-by-side with the same data input, my 12cP has been consistently slower by 50% as compared to my 12C.
If possible, I would suggest that potential users and buyers try this data set on both the 12C and 12cP before buying. Clear register. Find [i] after input [PMT]=-1458;[FV]=0,[n]=84,[PV]=103600. The HP12C would take 20 seconds "running" while the HP12cP would take about 30 seconds to give the same answer [i]=0.4059!
This apparent lack of speed is difficult to accept for a supposedly latest financial calculator upgrade from any manufacturer! It is a bad joke, considering that my 12 years old HP10B could perform the same TVM calculation in just 2 to 3 seconds!

However, both HP12Cs are great value for money if the user consider the TOTAL solutions and free website support and training which is available from HP. In addition, there are lots of literature and solutions written by third party users over the still ongoing 20+ years production run of the 12C. IMHO,in addition to excellent user support, the PROGRAMMING capability of the HP12c is the other major face saving advantage which put both the 12Cs over its TI challengers for now.
The good people @ HP may like to know that 96% of my fellow students are now using their competitor's Texas Instrument TI-BAIIplus! The BAII-plus is chosen for its 50% lower price and much faster processing speed. The relative slower speed of the HP12c/12cP does not pull the crowds from TI, especially when speed is much needed during stressful exams condition. A slower processing speed would also cancels off the advantage of learning RPN.
After using the misnomer of a sucessor HP12cP, I personally feel that the 12C is still very much the industry standard. However, it would be better if HP would consider incorporating some useful improvements like a [BACKSPACE] key if it is technically feasible. Also, seasoned 12C users of the RPN would not miss the ALG mode on the 12cP especially when it HP doesn't have ( ) included. The HP12cP is an odd ball ALG calculator from this viewpoint. A suggestion to the dear good people at HP, please let future HP12C GOLD upgrades remain as an exclusively RPN machine.

I would also be very glad if somebody from HP could highlight to me on which are the 10+ more (130+ total)improved functions on the 12cP as compared to the 12C (120+ functions) to help me justify the additional price of 28%+ paid for the 12cP in Singapore.
Both my 12C/cP sets were "Made in China" by probably the same HP OEM to reasonably high HP quality. At a glance, the HP12C gold apparently has better cosmetic finishing than the 12cP. In addition, the keys on the 12C does feel very much better than those on the 12cP.
In a nutshell, the 12cP is more of "an alternative to 12C with ALG mode" than an upgrade or a sucessor of the 12C GOLD. When choosing between the 12C or 12cP, it is wiser to go for the 12C the "good old" 12C or 12C GOLD!
Smart consumers who do not need extra memory for programming and the ALG mode, should go for GOLD, buy the 12C GOLD standard until HP could produce a real and wholehearted improvement of the 12C line.
Thank you for reading my personal user experience with the HP12c PLATINUM.

Casio fx-9860G Slim Graphing Calculator Review

Casio fx-9860G Slim Graphing Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Casio fx-9860G Slim Graphing Calculator because of the combination of enhanced and easy to use functionality, with a superb display. After previously using other powerful calculators with tiny font sizes and confusing/massive instructions at times, this is a major step up. It has everything needed for most mathematics - calculus, equation solvers, stats, spreadsheets, graphing, programming, recursion etc. and once connected to the Casio Web page using the included Casio software link, other apps can be added - the geometry app is fun and useful. For the cost, this clobbers the higher priced competition - I donated a calculator that cost twice as much to my employer's charity Christmas raffles. I had given up on calculators in favor of laptop/PC based math codes, but now it is fun again to use a calculator for courses and to just sit back at work sometimes & crank the numbers while going through tech. publications.

Harman Kardon AVR7550HD 7.2 Channel Audio/Video Receiver Review

Harman Kardon AVR7550HD 7.2 Channel Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been seeing the other 2 reviews listed and am sorry they had issues with the wonderful receiver! Had mine now for a little over a month and let me tell you, awesome incredible powerful and not just making this up! I had this receivers older brother the Harman Kardon AVR 745 for several years and decided to replace it with newer technology and first tried the Onkyo TX NR3008, and really liked all the features, including the very good upscaling and twin hdmi outs, but had to send it back and get all my money back for reasons of sound quality compared to my older technology but superior sounding HK 745 that had more power. The Onkyo was missing sound detail and was all there, but, detailed highs were missing, midrange was missing detail also. The bass output was almost as good as the HK. Sound reproduction was what I am/was after. Good thing I purchased it from a good store, they gave me all my money back minus shipping back to them and this was in latter 2009. So decided at the end 2010 to try again, after reading reviews and more reviews purchased the Yamaha RX A3000, really liked the features on this receiver better than the Onkyo, but again another receiver sent back and got my money back!! Upscaling was better than the Onkyo, was faster on swapping sources, twin hdmi out worked wonderfully, but the sound reproduction was not as good as my old HK 745. Was missing the detailed highs, mids were missing detail also, bass reproduction was very good though, still not as good as the old 745 but close. Finally decided to try this monster, the Harman Kardon AVR 7550hd!! I just thought my old Harman Kardon AVR 745 sounded good! This new receiver has better sound reproduction than its older brother, sound detail is hard to describe, but my custom built big boy speakers have never sounded so good! The receiver is still breaking in and gets better sounding every day, highs are so crisp, mids are more detailed than ever and the bass output, well let me say have had stuff falling off my entertainment center, with my sub turned off!! That had never happened before, turn the sub on and the police have stopped by because neighbors complained. HK stands behind their products as long as purchased from an authorized seller, and yes there have been bad HK products and I have my share, so was hesitant on buying this receiver, but now what took me so long!!!!! Purchase and enjoy!!

The IN3116 installed easily and booted up with great results right out of the box. We are using a pre-existing VGA cable for now and hope to upgrade to the HDMI cable soon to take advantage of the full capability of the projector. We will also have to be certain the computer is equipped with the hardware to send a quality HD signal. Getting familiar with the remote menu gobbles up some time. No user manual comes with the projector. I downloaded one online without any difficulty, and found the additional info most helpful. I checked out the projector at home before installation by plugging a flash card into the USB port. It booted up without having to push any buttons. The automatic keystoning immediately squared up the framing of the picture. Once installed it was necessary to turn off the auto keystoning to prevent it from periodically trying to tweak the framing. I was able to install in the same location as the previous projector and was able to frame the image to fit our 16:9 ration screen using the zoom adjustment. The projector has a 'boxy' look to it, but if you can live with that, you will have yourself a great video projector.
We also saved $1,000 or better by purchasing through Amazon.com. We received the projector in a timely fashion without incident.

Optoma PRO150S 2800 Lumen SVGA DLP Multimedia Projector Review

Optoma PRO150S 2800 Lumen SVGA DLP Multimedia Projector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned a projector about 7-8 years ago. It was very expensive back then (Infocus brand) and I always thought it had a great picture in our dark basement setting... but the output was not bright enough to work in a semi-lit room during the day. When the bulb finally burnt out and I realized how expensive they were to replace, I got rid of it and bought a 42" Sony rear-projection TV. I have been happy with the Sony for the last 7 years or so but just moved from a large house into a smaller apartment and was looking for a way to free up all the space that this rather large TV took up (not to mention it is almost impossible to move because it is so big and heavy). I was looking into the newest technology of LCD, Plasma, and even LED TVs and the prices are pretty crazy for the size you get. I remembered how cool it was to have a projector and I thought to myself that would be great to save space and get a HUGE screen. I looked into them and I knew from my prior ownership that anything over 2000 lumens was typically considered to be bright enough to use in a semi-dark room. Most of the projectors advertised and sold as "Home Theater Projectors" are just as expensive as the TVs and I understand that they have native resolutions of 1280x800 or higher and some I have seen as high as 5500 lumens.... but I think a lot of it is hype. How black can the blacks in the video get? Why do you need a 60,000 to 1 contrast ratio? If you are not going to project the image 100 feet or more, why do you need that many lumens? I took a chance on this projector because I found it brand new on ebay for less than four hundred dollars and thought what the heck. At 2800 lumens it is plenty bright (even in daylight) to be seen clearly. The picture looks razor sharp and all my friends that spent thousands on big screen TVs are all jealous and say it looks better than their TVs. For 1/8 or less the cost, I have a 75" screen that is 1080i and 720p compatible. It is awesome for movies or ball games. Everyone always wants to have the superbowl party at my place.
Compared to my old Infocus projector, I can see technology has come a long way. This Optoma projector is very compact, lightweight, and quiet. It does put out a fair amount of heat (exhaust fan) but other than that I have absolutely no complaints, nor do I see a reason to spend thousands more on a big screen TV or "Home Theater" projector. In fact, this projector is actually TOO bright for the 10' that I am projecting the picture so I turned it down to "eco-mode" which dims it a bit and saves another 1,000 hours on the bulb. For the money, I think you would be very pressed to find a better quality projector with higher lumens and resolution for anywhere close to the same cost. The replacement cost of the bulbs are under $200 each so I can rest assured that this projector will last me the rest of my happy life, and even if it wasn't affordable to replace the bulb. At 350 dollars, I think 240,000 minutes of watching this screen is well worth the money I paid for it. That is 8 cents per hour.
Bottom line: Incredible Hi-Def picture, compact space-saving design, bright enough for daytime viewing, and very cost affordable. If you are considering this projector compared to some similar models, you have my recommendation to go with this one. I checked out Dell, NEC, Hitachi, Epson, and Infocus and nothing in this price range compared. 2800 lumens and 3000:1 contrast ratio is pretty impressive. Deep, rich dark colors... True blacks... and bright whites. I think you will be as happy as I am.I will post some pictures as soon as I get my screen installed. Right now I am just projecting on a (brown) wall. I can't even imagine how good the picture is going to be on a real screen!

I apologize for the negative feedback given recently for the purchase of the Calculator I bought from them. It was simply mis-communication, and in doing so, they have issued me a $15.00 refund. I greatly recommend them, and I will be sure to buy from them again. Thank you very much.
