TI-36X Pro Scientific Calculat Review

TI-36X Pro Scientific Calculat

Compared it to casio 115es and the sharp 516w (both are top-of-the-line, non-graphing, non-programmable, scientific calculators). This thing blows them away. It is much easier to use. It doesn't need specials modes for matricies and complex numbers, and does them on the same stack (just like CAS calculators). The operation history is implemented just like on ti-89/92. Go up and grab any number from history, and use it in any calculation, by simply going up to it, and hitting "enter" (it's easier than copy and paste). They finally fixed the "*10^" problem and replaced with the standard "E" button (which takes priority over all other operations). It's as if they listened to all of my complaints about the ti30xpro and fixed them all and made the ti36xpro. All the extra features (solver, matrix, statistics, formula table, integrals, derivatives) are extremely intuitive, and I literally never needed the manual to use them.
Another AMAZING thing (because we're on AMAZon.com), is that after you solve for things in the solver, or you do the linear fit on your statistical data (as an example). The calculator actually saves the variables from their respective solvers into the variables. So after you've solved for things, all your solutions are in the variables. IE, you solved for t in the solver => go back to stack, and the variable t will have THE number in it. Calculator also remembers the history and the variables when turned off. It's intuitive and simple.
My only gripe is that when editing it defaults to the "replace" method, instead of "insert". I usually need to insert things when redoing calculations, not replace things. It's an extra keystroke, it's a minor gripe in comparison to how much easier it is to use than the competition on all other counts. Another small feature that I noticed on the Sharp 516 is that it puts apostrophes on the thousands (so it shows "1'000'000" instead of "1000000"), which is a nice feature for big numbers. This calculator doesn't do that, it's no biggie.
More on the competition. The method of "mode-switching" that all Japanese calculators are famous for, is antiquated. The casio and sharp calculators literally forget everything that was done in one mode and switches to the next. If you solve for something in one mode, forget about it, you have to write it down on paper, because switching modes deletes history, so there's no way to look over it in the calculator itself. Casio 115ES is "amazing" in that it forgets all history when turned off! Say you're doing your homework, walk away to grab a snack, come back, your calculator auto-turned-off, and all your calculations are GONE! "Genius"! The history on both sharp and casio is annoying, you can recalculate the formula from the history, but you can NOT use it in your current formula, and you also can't grab the answers to use in your current calculation. After using TI's implementation, this limitation is simply a cripple.
If you have any q's, let me know; I have all 3 calculators, though maybe not for long :). If you're used to cas/graphing calculators, and your teacher doesn't allow one, this IS the calculator to get. It has the most universal (no mode switching) history/stack system, and it has the best copy/paste method. I almost don't miss my ti92 on the chem tests :).

Got this one for high school after already owning the TI-89. I got this one because it can be used on more tests than the TI-89, but I was spoiled by the TI-89. There are times when I go back to the TI-89 because it can do more kinds of problems.

This is a great calculator. The keys are the same as the TI 83 but the calculator has more to offer than the TI 83. This one does so much more. You can put real games on this one, you can store formulas on it and you can make your own study cards, you write a question then enter the answer and the calculator will help you study and it does much much more. I got it at my local store cheaper than they sell it here on Amazon. So you might want to check around before putting out this much. My calculator was the talk of the class in a good way, all the girls wanted to know where I got it.

Texas Instruments TI30XA Scientific Calculator Review

I'm a research scientist who uses computers both at home and at work. But I also like to have a good scientific calculator ready at hand for convenience. I prefer Texas Instruments calculators for ease of use and reliability. I keep a calculator in my bedroom, den, living room, car, and at work. Three of my calculators are TI30XAs. That's right, as a practicing scientist I find that the bargain-priced TI30XA calculator has every scientific function I need for most problems. On the rare occasions that I need more power I use a computer. It never ceases to amaze me that many of my scientific colleagues are so computer dependent that they don't even own a calculator. Whenever they're away from their computer, they're lost. But with several TI30XAs, I have a calculator handy almost everywhere I am. You can spend more for a calculator but it's hard to find one that out performs the inexpensive TI30XA for most applications.

Once you get to a certain level of math classes, a regular oldcalculator just isn't good enough anymore--you need a high-functioningcalculator that can perform algebraic, trigonometric, and statistical problemsin addition to general mathematical tasks. The Texas Instruments TI-30XAscientific calculator can do this for you. It is extremely handy when it comesto figuring tricky fractions. It can add, subtract, multiply, and dividefractions when entered in a traditional numerator/denominator format. Thiscalculator can also do a variety of conversions, from fractions to decimals, degrees to radians to grads, DMS to decimal to degrees, and polar torectangular. The display screen holds up to 10 digits.
For high school orcollege students tackling advanced math, this is a great tool (and a thoughtfulback-to-school gift), and with more professors allowing the use of calculatorsduring classes and exams, it's a necessary one. Easy to use and easy to slipinto a backpack, the TI-30XA will soon become indispensable for both the seriousand the striving math student. --Dana Van Nest

I use this calculator for Statistics class. It has parenthesis which helps to reduce the iteration of calculations. It has store function with multiple variables to store the answer from previous calculation and easily scrolls up and down to previous calculations even after screen had been cleared. It has solar charge panel. It works under the minimum light conditions. I recommend this calculator for non-graphing calculations and everyday usage.

TI-Nspire CAS Graphing Calculator Review

TI-Nspire CAS Graphing Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a calculator with tons of potential, however it is not nearly as user friendly as every other TI graphing calculator is. I'm an AP Calculus teacher and ordered one of these through school funds to test out. It can do everything that the TI-89 does and has much more potential than the TI-89, but the thought of teaching my students to use one of these just scares the bejesus out of me.
Pros:
1. Large screen with good resolution.
2. little green letter buttons make it easier to enter commands.
3. WYSIWYG typing means you don't have to remember calculator syntax. It's much easier to enter a definite integral or limit.
4. Graphing window allows you to graph rectangular, polar, and parametric equations simultaneously.
5. Click and drag feature on the graph screen is nice.
Cons:
1. The letter buttons are always in the way while I'm trying to enter numbers.
2. Screen can be difficult to read.
3. There is not a model that hooks up to a TI presenter. It does come with software where you can use a computer version of the calculator (assuming you have an LCD projector), but it's much slower than simply hitting actual buttons.
4. Finding max, min, roots, and intersections takes longer than on the TI-89.
5. When you do find the things from my #4 con, the calculator displays them right in the middle of the graphing screen, so you have to click and drag them out of the way to continue viewing the graph.
6. The "y=" screen is included as part of the graph screen, taking up graphing space.
7. Viewing a function table isn't difficult, but I can't figure out how to view a window containing ONLY the function table. It splits the screen with the graph on the left and the table on the right. This keeps you from being able to see several function values at the same time. Also I can't figure out how to close the table. I'm sure there's an easy way, but due to the completely inadequate user manual I have no idea what it is.
EDIT: I figured out how to view a function table on a different page/tab in the calculator, so the split screen problem is solved and it's much easier to close the function table. It still is not very intuitive at all and if I weren't very tech savvy I'd have never figured it out.
8. I have yet to find a differential equation graphing mode, and internet searches lead me to believe there isn't one. Why in the world would TI include this with the TI-89 and not with their new, supposed top-of-the-line model?
I may edit this as I find more pros or cons. I've had this calculator for 3 or 4 months and I do get it out on occasion to give it another shot, but each time I'm just as disappointed as the last. I keep think it just has a steep learning curve and I'll eventually catch on but it's not happening. That being the case, I have a feeling that if I tried to get my students to use this calculator I would be spending too much time just teaching them to use it.
If this calculator was only $50 and the TI-89 Titanium stayed at about $150 I'd still encourage my students to get the 89.

Because it is USB, it does not work eith TI-Graphlink software. Don't get me wrong the Graphlink software isn't great, but it is much more powerful than TI Connect. Plus you can use both TI Connect and TI-Graphlink software with the serial cables. The graph link software is rather clunky, but much more reliable than ti connect.

Texas Instruments TI-83-Plus Silver Edition Review

Texas Instruments TI-83-Plus Silver Edition
Average Reviews:

If you are a high school student, then this calculator is for you. It has everything you need, for algebra, precalculus, and calculus. The good thing about the 83+ is that it is upgradable, so the need for a new calculator doesn't arise, every few years. Purchasing a graph-link can add on a TREMENDOUS amount of programs to use for Physics, Geometry, and even 3D-Graphs, (previously only on the ti-89 and up). If you are in High School, do NOT get the ti-92 or ti-89, because they will probably be banned from standardized tests, and high math classes, so ask your math teacher, because they are too hard to use and understand. Also, these 2 calculators are aimed for more college-level students, so if you are in college, try the ti-89. But in every case, a ti-83+ is ideal!

TI-30XS Multiview Calculator Review

TI-30XS Multiview Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently got this exact calculator as I started up my Electronics college course. It's been nothing but amazing for me. Viewing multiple problems and answers at a time is good, but browsing your entire history with the arrow pad is great.
It intuitive too. While brosing through my previous entries, I found a few different answers that I wanted to plug in together and get the sum. I browsed my way up to one, and on a guess, hit ENTER. It placed that number in my new problem at the bottom. Okay, lets see if it will do it again... I hit PLUS, then browsed up and got another old answer. It not only remembered what I'd input so far on the new problem, but put my next selection exactly where I hoped! All this is probably in the manual, but this is so well designed, there are many cases like this example where things just work out the way I think they should.
One negative on this calculator is the CLEAR button and the DELETE button. I'm glad they spaced them apart, but they put the CLEAR button where I would think they'd put DELETE. And vice versa. I've looked at other Texas Instrument calculators, and this seems to be the convention... maybe it's just me.
I appreciate their use of the button "x10^n" instead of the "EE" button. I had no idea what EE would be without finding it in the manual, but I knew right away what to expect when I hit x10^n.
Lastly, this calculator's design and wording have been a great stepping stone for me, to get past the gap between dinky little arithmatic calculators and heavy-duty graphing calculators.
Highly recommended. Incredible buy.

Texas Instruments Voyage 200 Calculator Review

Texas Instruments Voyage 200 Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The actual calculator itself is stunningly powerful. It is faster than the TI-92, the full keyboard makes it easier to work with than the TI-89, and the ability to solve, factor, work with imaginary numbers, give exact answers, as well as do all of these things symbolically, plus the amazing applications included (a version of Geometer's sketchpad!), make this the best calculator made by TI.
Just beware that some standardized tests and some teachers will not let you use this calculator.
The biggest drawback is the documentation that is supposed to help you utilize the power of this calculator. There really isn't any. There's a short manual that's included in the box, but it only gives you the broad overview of how to put the batteries in and how to turn it on and off.
To find any information on how to, say, type something in that you want to factor, you have to load up the cd-rom, and hunt around on that thing to find the information you want.
Why don't they include all of this documentation along with the calculator in an actual book form? (Okay, so I know the answer to that - it saves money for them.)
It's a huge hassle - if I'm at class, or work and want to be able to use some function, I have to wait to figure it out until I can get home and load up the cd-rom, find the right page, etc....not to mention that the documentation on the CD-rom isn't that helpful either. There's lots of discussion of stuff, but it is very hard to understand.
A great calculator, but awful documentation that makes learning how to use all of its powerful functions frustrating and annoying.

I got this calculator a couple of days ago with the rechargeable battery (You should get it if you buy this, the $15 dollars will save money in the long run). The calculator turns on quick. Has great features. The touchpad is like a computer trackpad. You just move your finger and it moves the mouse.
It comes with many built in documents that teach you how to use the calculator. They're helpful if this is your first T.I. Nspire (This is my second).
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because you have to go to T.I.'s website to get your FREE T.I. 84 keypad and wait for them to ship it to you. Mine still is has not arrived.

Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator Review

Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally! This is a superb upgrade to TI's previous BA II product. I hated the previous model with a passion given the near "touchless" keypad (allowing for frustrating key entry). THIS is the calculator that I would want to use for the CFA exam (did I mention how much I HATED the previous TI BA calculator??).
For those thinking of the HP12C line, I had a 12C for many years and loved it. However, after it got ruined due to a playful two year old, I bought a new one and found it cheaply made compared to the one I bought in the 80's (very disappointing) and have since abandoned using it. Interestingly, I found the following calculation example from a review of the HP 12C Platinum edition to be very interesting: "If possible, I would suggest that potential users and buyers try this data set on both the 12C and 12cP before buying. Clear register. Find [i] after input [PMT]=-1458;[FV]=0,[n]=84,[PV]=103600. The HP12C would take 20 seconds "running" while the HP12cP would take about 30 seconds to give the same answer [i]=0.4059!"
How long for the BA II Plus Professional? I timed it at about one second.
As calculators go, this is a mighty sweet device -- especially given the clear HP-like display viewable at all angles!! Count me as a definite TI BA II convert!

TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad Review

TI-Nspire CAS with Touchpad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Call me totally impressed! I have used the TI-83/84 calculators for years but rarely the advanced features they offered. I often found them to obscure and annoying. The Nspire takes a powerful document approach that is totally different than the Ti 83/84 series.
This Nspire CAS Touchpad is quite a revelation. It took me all of an hour to understand (with the Dummies book at my side) almost all the functions it offers. The keypad is clear and obvious unlike the first versions of the Nspire. I was amazed at how much I could do with this device with so little effort. I have been using Mathematica for many of the classes I teach. The Nspire can replace Mathematica for most of the things we do in undergraduate physics and engineering courses. That is impressive.
The large screen is a bonus. The characters are clear with high resolution. The large screen means that everything you do is easier to see and analyze. The screen is adjustable but it is still a calculator screen. You need light to see it well as it is not backlit like LCD computer monitors.
Some people compare the Nspire with the Ti-89. Sorry, no contest. This Inspire runs rings around the Ti-89, a calculator I never really liked. It is faster, easier to use and read, and a joy to use. Don't waste your time with the TI-89. Putting a little time in learning the Nspire paradigm will reward you.
The Nspire comes with desktop software that duplicates the functions of the calculator. On a MacBook Pro, it installed right away without problems. There is a link included with the software that allows you to backup and update the Nspire as well as move files back and forth.
The Nspire links up with the Venier Go! and EasyLink sensors. I haven't tried this yet but will in the next week or so. We have LabPros and LabQuests for our classes, but it will be fun to try the Nspire anyway.
I have not been so impressed with a calculator since my very first HP-15C too many years ago. It's even more impressive than my first professional slide rule! I very rarely gush about a product, but this device is something I have been looking for a very long time.

Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator Review

Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Main Points:
I used this calculator for over 10 years before it finally stopped working, and I treated it fairly roughly (e.g.,coffe spills). I think others here have attested to the functionality of the TI-30, so I just want to emphasize that it's a tough little gadget as well. Yes, the buttons are on the small side and there is a bit of play, but this was never a major problem (although at times it slows down data entry). You can go to http://education.ti.com/downloads for a good overview of TI calculators, and you can scope out one of TI's major competitors at http://www.casio.com.
A Little History:
This was also one of the first commercially available low-priced calculators that had two-line display and backspace to correct or edit data entry. The dual-power and scrolling display features were also once unusual. The top line (for data entry) shows up to 11 characters; you can scroll backwards or forwards up to 88! The bottom line (shows results) displays up to a 10-digit answer along with a 2-digit exponent.
Individual Needs Differ:
From the reviews here, it appears that high school math is now more difficult than it once was. If you know that you're going to need graphing capability, then obviously this is not the choice for you. Similarly, the prevalence of laptop computers and math/stats software may obviate the need for some of the more advanced features.
Recommendation:
The layout is very good and, for such a low price, it packs a lot of calculating might. However, high school (or college)students may want to narrow their choices and then ask their teacher which one has the most relevant functions for the next few years of math. Compared to twenty-five or so years ago, one can now get a lot more calculator for the money. Depending on your budget, therefore, you might determine that a calculator like this is sufficient for your short-term needs, but that you'll need a new one if you go on to more advanced stats and math. In any event, this is a durable calculator that works very well.
